Violin and Viola Basics

  1. A regular practice schedule is important in learning and maintaining good posture, technique, and sound. This involves:
    1. Proper technique and method in setting up your violin/viola
    1. Tuning and a warm-up (such as a scale or exercise)
    1. Practicing skills and pieces
    1. Carefully putting your instrument away
  • Know how to take care of your instrument:
    • Tighten and loosen the bow appropriately
    • Rosin the bow when necessary
    • Use cloth to wipe off excess rosin on the violin/viola strings and fingerboard
    • Be gentle with tuning
    • Hold your violin/viola by the neck only when transferring it to and from the case
  • Proper posture:
    • Upright and straight back (sitting or standing)
    • Flexible right wrist, relaxed right elbow and right shoulder
    • Loose, but firm, grasp of the left hand on the neck (no smushing the neck)
    • Feet flat on the floor (if sitting)
  • Learning a new instrument can be challenging, but very rewarding! Take breaks during practicing especially if you get frustrated. You learn things over time, they don’t come immediately!
  • Ask questions when you are confused or would like more information.
  • HAVE FUN! Hard work pays off!
