Practice makes permanent. If you practice correctly from the beginning, you will save yourself a lot of time and frustration later on. Don’t practice bad habits!
Practice Check-List and Tips
- Make sure you’re in an area free from distractions (or as much as you can be) with sufficient lighting.
- Set a timer for 20-30 minutes.
- Begin with your scale or warm-up, practicing it several times.
- Work through your lesson notes as written.
- OVERALL you should be practicing things slowly with the intention to improve and overcome obstacles!
- Take short breaks or stretch if you feel tightness in your fingers, hands, wrists, shoulders, or neck… or if you feel frustrated.
- Have fun!
- Give yourself a pat on the back after each practice.
Make sure you practice the number of times per week your teacher suggests.
Each time you practice you should work on achieving correct notes and correct rhythms, as well as any other points we have discussed.
Practice sessions aren’t supposed to be perfect – they are supposed to help you learn and improve!
- Did I rush through my practice material? If so, work through your material more slowly next time.
- Did I practice until my timer went off? (Hint: you should be doing this!)
- Was there anything I didn’t understand or need more clarification on? If so, reach out to Miss Emily.
Stretches
- Shake your arms like you’re a wet dog trying to get the water off – this will help loosen your muscles.
- Do shoulder and wrist circles.
- Stretch out your fingers by curling them into a fist then reaching your fingers out far.
